93:20 – A MOMENT IN TIME

FROM THE ARTIST

My aim here was to bring to life perhaps the most iconic moment in City history. I’ve taken us out on the Etihad pitch with Sergio and the players to relive this epic day from a completely original angle. The entire crowd erupting in joy, has been painstakingly recreated from several video images and features almost 100 fans that were actually there on the day.

This has got to be the single most difficult painting I have ever been commissioned to create. This moment has been burnt into the minds of every Blues fan. The footage and photographs of 93:20 have been seen a million times, so my challenge was to bring it to life from a never seen before angle. I’ve taken the viewer out onto the pitch up close with Sergio as his teammates converge upon him, so you too can be part of the action at THE MOMENT in Manchester City history.

As I began painting it soon dawned on me that the backdrop to the action on the pitch, which was originally intended to be a blurry Etihad stadium crowd, had a story of its own to tell. A story just as important as the one on-field.

With huge respect for Sergio’s poise in front of goal, 93:20 is about so much more than what happened on field, no matter how extraordinary that was. It’s a ‘where were you when’ moment for all City fans, in fact all football fans. It changed people’s lives, created bonds between fans, families and football lovers the world over. Those who were in the stadium that day remember it as one of the defining moments in their lives.

And so, I ended up spending double the time painting, in full detail, almost 100 jubilant fans that were in the crowd as Sergio went on his shirtless victory lap. Every face in that crowd is an actual person who was there on the day. So, you may recognise your face or someone you know. I have attempted to merge the joy in the stands with that of the players on-field. Because after all, they are one and the same; two sides of the same coin. One cannot ‘be’ without the other.

Although I have tried to keep all details authentic to the events of the day, I have used some artistic license. A few faces in the crowd have been transplanted from other parts of the stadium and one special fan has been added for a particular reason of significance, which will be revealed later in this booklet. You may also notice that I have put Sergio’s shirt in his other hand to suit the composition. Several players were chasing him at the time, but I have placed them strategically to suit the balance of the painting.

I have also brought in a few players that were pivotal to the events of the game. Zabaleta for his first goal, Dzeko for the second, Mario for his one and only goal assist for the year, Joe Hart for his famous celebration and of course, Sergio Aguero.

FROM THE CLUB

Sunday 13 May 2012 is a date Manchester City fans will never forget.

In the words of Rob Pollard (Manchester City Written Content Lead):
“On a day of unimaginable drama, with a set of circumstances scriptwriters would have rejected for being too far from reality, all our dreams came true. Champions of England, again. The 44-year wait over, at last. With one swing of his right boot, Sergio Agüero ensured two numbers – 93:20 – became a reference point in the Club’s rich history for the greatest end to a season English football has ever seen.

As the Argentine wheeled away, his shirt swinging above his head and legendary status secured, the euphoria came pouring out at the Etihad Stadium, where fans had experienced every feeling possible as ‘Typical City’ threatened to strike again, in the most devastating fashion. Hope, uncertainty, disbelief and despair, Roberto Mancini’s men took supporters on a whirlwind ride of emotion before eventually arriving at a final destination of ecstasy. As we approach the tenth anniversary of that historic day, that is exactly what this wonderful work of art portrays – the elation of winning against all odds, of fans enjoying the moment in the sun they so richly deserved.”
