A LABOUR OF LOVE FOR AN EX ROYBOY
Being a former Fitzroy player in the 1980’s, this was truly a labour of love. I had the privilege of playing alongside “The Master” Bernie Quinlan, Garry Wilson, Paul Roos, Richard Osborne, Alastair Lynch, Mickey Conlan and Gary Pert, who are just a few of the legends that burst through the banner at Brunswick Oval in this celebration of Lion’s history. In the tatters of the banner (top left) you can just make out the shape of a gorilla, the mascot in the early years. Even though the player’s have left the rooms for good the faithful lion remains at the entrance to the den, for eternity. I just had to slip myself into this elite group somehow. It was never going to be as a player so holding up the banner (far right) will have to be good enough!
Brisbane football Club Commissioned this piece to celebrate the rich history of the Lions. It was unveiled at a gala Fitzroy team of the Century dinner which saw the Fitzroy family reunited five years after the merger. It is the single happiest memory of my 25 year career and put me back in touch with the community that cheered us on at the Junction Oval during my playing days.
